Skills in Convoy

Author instruction bundles, install organization templates, and use project Skills in threads.

A Skill is a reusable instruction bundle with a SKILL.md entry point and optional supporting text files. Use one for a procedure that an agent should load when needed, such as reviewing a migration or preparing release notes.

Convoy stores these Skills in your organization or project and delivers project Skills through MCP. Installing a Skill into Convoy does not write files into your local AI client's configuration. For that separate setup, see Install Skills for AI clients.

Create a project Skill

  1. Open project settings, then Skills.
  2. Choose Create skill or New skill.
  3. Enter a name, such as release-review, and a description explaining when an agent should use it. Category is optional.
  4. Write the procedure in the SKILL.md editor. Add supporting files if the procedure needs checklists, examples, or reference material.
  5. Save. The Skill is now available to this project's agents and thread composer.

Names use lowercase letters, digits, and hyphens, with an optional namespace such as team:release-review. Enter the name without a leading slash. The name and description fields are the catalog metadata; adding YAML frontmatter to the body does not update them.

A small SKILL.md can start with:

# Release review

Use this skill when preparing a release summary.

1. Read the task and linked artifacts.
2. Compare the intended behavior with the changes and test results.
3. Read checklist.md before writing the summary.
4. List shipped behavior, known limitations, and checks that were not run.

Add checklist.md as a supporting file and give it the checks specific to your project. File paths are relative, such as examples/summary.md. A Skill can contain up to 50 files including SKILL.md, with a 256 KB limit per file and a 1 MB total limit. Save writes the entry point and supporting files together.

Install an organization Skill

Organization Skills are templates. They become available in a project only after installation.

Open the project's Skills settings and choose Install org skill, either in the empty state or in the menu beside New skill. Select a template and install it. Convoy creates an independent project copy; editing that copy does not edit the organization template.

When the template changes, the project copy offers Update. A locally edited copy can also offer Reset to restore the current template. Both replace the copy's content and files after confirmation. They do not merge local edits. Deleting the organization template leaves installed project copies intact.

Organization owners and admins manage organization Skills. Project admins and members manage project Skills, including installing and refreshing templates. Viewers have read-only access.

Use a Skill in a thread

Type / in a project thread composer and select the Skill from the menu. Use /skill: to narrow the suggestions to Skills. For example, select release-review, then add the task you want reviewed and send the message.

The selected Skill stays as a compact reference in the message. Convoy asks the agent to load it with load_skill before acting. That tool returns SKILL.md and the supporting file paths; read_skill_file reads an additional file when needed. Agents can also discover project Skills through the MCP tool catalog without an explicit mention.

Only installed or directly authored project Skills appear here. If an organization template is missing from the menu, install it in the project first. If an agent cannot load a Skill, check that its MCP connection targets the same project.

Record a Skill's source

When copying a Skill from a repository, the editor's source fields can record its repository, commit, branch or tag, and subdirectory. These fields identify the copied version; pasting a repository URL into them does not fetch files.

Use Prompts / Slash commands for reusable message text. Use Project agents for a working prompt attached to every new thread created with that agent.
