Project agents

Create reusable agent personas, select them for threads, and configure task delegation.

A Project agent gives an AI thread a name and a reusable working prompt. For example, a Reviewer agent can carry your review criteria so you do not have to paste them into every new thread.

The agent, runtime, and connection have separate jobs. The Project agent supplies the persona and prompt. A runtime such as Claude Code or Codex executes the work. Your CLI profile and selected path choose the machine connection and working directory. Create a connection with Install and connect before starting a thread.

Create a project agent

  1. Open your project's settings and choose AI Agents.
  2. Choose New agent. Enter a name, an optional description and category, and a color.
  3. Write the agent's Prompt. Describe how it should work across tasks, rather than putting one task's request here.
  4. Save the agent.

For a Reviewer, a short prompt might be:

Review the requested changes for correctness and regressions.
Read the relevant specification before judging behavior.
Give each finding a concrete trigger and a file location.
Do not change files unless the user asks you to fix a finding.

Project admins and members can manage Project agents. Viewers can read them but cannot create, edit, delete, or delegate work to them. An agent has no project membership or permissions of its own. Threads run with the connecting user's access.

Start a thread with an agent

In a new-thread composer, choose the agent in the context bar, select your connection, path, and runtime, then write and send the task request. Default starts without a Project agent. The agent selector appears when the project has active agents.

Convoy binds the agent to that thread and copies its prompt at creation. The agent chip shows the binding alongside the thread's context. You cannot switch the agent on an existing thread. Editing or deleting the Project agent later does not change the prompt an existing thread uses; start a new thread to use the revised prompt.

An agent can have no prompt. In that case its name still identifies the thread, but it adds no working instructions.

Reuse an agent

The menu beside New agent offers From template and From project.

Organization settings hold Agent templates. Installing one copies its name, prompt, description, category, and appearance into your project. You can edit the copy without changing the template. A newer template version makes Update available; Reset restores a locally edited copy to its current template. Both replace the copied fields after confirmation, so preserve any local prompt edits you want to keep before applying them.

From project copies an agent from another project you can view. The imported agent is independent and has no template update relationship with the source.

Delegate a task

Choose an agent under AI Agents in a task's assignee control. This sets the task's delegation. The human assignee remains accountable for the task. If the task has no owner, a normal delegation assigns ownership to you.

Delegation alone records who is doing the work. A Project agent's optional Automation settings can also prepare a thread when you delegate through the web interface. Configure its first message, preferred runtime, model, effort, mode, and whether to work locally or in a new worktree.

By default, delegation opens a prefilled composer with the task and agent attached. Check your connection and path, edit the request, then send. Canceling the composer keeps the delegation but creates no thread. The reusable agent Prompt and this first-message prompt are separate fields.

You can opt into Auto-start next time when sending. This is your preference for that project, not a setting shared with teammates. Change it later in your user settings under Agents. Delegation through MCP, the CLI, or bulk updates does not trigger this web automation.

Selecting an automation-enabled agent manually in a new-thread composer also seeds its configured defaults. You can change those defaults before sending; Convoy preserves text you have already edited. Each user still selects their own connection and path.

For reusable messages, see Prompts / Slash commands. For procedures an agent loads when needed, see Skills in Convoy.
